In most post-apocalyptic fiction, the world ends because humanity builds something it cannot control—a nuclear arsenal, a genetically engineered virus, an artificial intelligence. In Trotillions, the world ends because humanity encounters something that forces it to evolve backward.
The Atmospheric Anomaly
The event known as the White Heat did not begin with explosions or military sirens. It began as an atmospheric anomaly—a sudden, inexplicable spike in global temperature accompanied by a silent, high-frequency wave. Electronics failed to record it, but biological nervous systems felt it intimately. It was the catalyst that triggered the end of human dominance on Earth.
Before humanity realized what was happening, the animal kingdom reacted. Birds vanished from the skies a week before the event. Domestic cats stopped vocalizing and began observing their owners with terrifying intensity. Dogs ceased barking, entering a state of hyper-vigilant waiting. The White Heat didn't just affect humans; it affected the entire biological network of the planet, preparing it for the Great Realignment.
The Receptor and Initiation
When the White Heat finally peaked, it forced a dormant biological channel in the human brain—the Receptor—to open simultaneously across the globe. This moment is known as the Initiation.
The Receptor actively sought an external frequency, a biological anchor to stabilize the host's nervous system. What happened next divided humanity into three distinct categories:
- Normals (Category 1): Individuals whose Receptors failed to open. They remained entirely human, maintaining standard physiology and old-world morals, but they became entirely vulnerable to the empty signal of the infected.
- The Bonded (Category 3): The Receptor opened and connected with an animal host. Through biological synchronization, the individual retained their memory and identity while developing new physiological characteristics. The Bonded represent a new form of life in the Dead Lands, where human and animal traits coexist.
- Shells (Category 2): The tragic, terrifying byproduct of the event. If the Receptor opened and found no external frequency to latch onto, it collapsed inward. This erased the host's personality, memories, and higher cognitive functions. The result was an aggressive, virus-born entity driven solely by the biological imperative to spread the infection.
The End of Human Monopoly
The White Heat reshaped the evolutionary ladder overnight. It proved that humanity's position at the top was a temporary arrangement. In the Dead Lands, the survivors do not mourn the old world. They are too busy navigating the lethal, politically complex reality of the new one.
