Shell
Humans whose Receptor opened into emptiness. Their personality is erased, leaving only an aggressive, primitive biological machine. The meat noise of the world.
The Failed Mutations
Shells are the tragic, terrifying byproduct of the White Heat. When the atmospheric event forced human Receptors to open, those who were completely isolated—away from any animal frequency—suffered a catastrophic neural collapse. The Receptor opened into emptiness, erasing the host's personality, memories, and higher cognitive functions. What remained was a biological machine, stripped of humanity.
Behavior and Threat Level
Shells are not traditional "zombies." They are not dead; they are aggressively, violently alive. They operate on a single, primal imperative: to spread the viral frequency. They do not feel pain, fear, or exhaustion. A lone Shell is dangerous, but in large numbers, they form "Noise Rains"—massive, directionless swarms that can overrun entire settlements in hours. They communicate through a low-frequency hum that can induce panic in unbonded humans.
Receptor Immunity
While a bite from a Shell is universally fatal (or transformative) for a Normal human, the Bonded possess what is known as Receptor Immunity. Because a Bonded's Receptor is already occupied by an animal frequency, the Shell's empty viral signal has no point of entry. This biological immunity is the primary reason the Bonded have been able to establish empires in the Dead Lands while humanity huddles behind razor wire.
