Receptor
A dormant biological channel in the human brain unlocked by the White Heat. Its state determines whether a person remains human, becomes a Shell, or transitions into a Bonded.
What is the Receptor?
The Receptor is a dormant biological channel located deep within the human brain, specifically interacting with the limbic system and neocortex. Before the White Heat, it was entirely inactive, an evolutionary dead end or perhaps a lock waiting for a key. When the White Heat swept across the globe, it acted as that key, forcing the Receptor to open in every living human being.
The Mechanism of Action
When the Receptor opens, it actively seeks an external frequency—a biological anchor to stabilize the host's nervous system. If an animal is in close proximity during Initiation, the Receptor "bonds" with the animal's neural frequency. This creates a Bonded mutant, where the human retains their intellect but integrates the physical, instinctual, and psychological traits of the animal.
The Consequence of Emptiness
If the Receptor opens and finds no external frequency to latch onto, it collapses inward. This catastrophic failure erases the host's personality, memories, and higher cognitive functions. The result is a Shell: a hyper-aggressive, virus-born entity driven solely by the biological imperative to spread the infection. The Receptor, in essence, is the single binary switch that determined the fate of humanity during the collapse.
